Fitness Programs for Seniors

We can all benefit from regular physical activity and it doesn’t have to be strenuous to achieve health benefits. Regular physical activity in older adults helps to maintain the ability to live independently and reduces the risk of falls and bone fractures.  It has been shown that physical activity is essential in increasing stamina and muscle strength as well as reducing symptoms of anxiety. At our adult day centre we do a daily fitness class that focuses on maintaining and improving:

– Range of motion and flexibility

– Endurance and strength

– Balance and co-ordination

– Cognitive functioning and promoting alertness

We use stretch bands, stress balls, pool noodles and music to get members engaged and active. Sometimes the fitness class is upbeat with the focus on increasing heart rate and other times the session may be a chair yoga class which is very relaxing. The fitness class is designed to accommodate all abilities; members are encouraged to take breaks when needed and stop if they experience any discomfort. A typical fitness class runs for about 30 minutes and includes a warm up and cool down.
